Soldiers arrest, detain journalists over curfew

TWO journalists escaped death bya whisker in Jemaa Local Government Area of Kaduna State at the weekend, as soldiers on duty in the area dealt heavy blow on them for allegedly not observing the curfew imposed on Southern Kaduna.However, spokesman of the government said no part of Kaduna State was placed under curfew as peace had largely been attained, apart from baring the use of commercial motorcycles at night.At a press conference shortly after the incident, Christain Association of Nigeria (CAN) said it was wrong for soldiers who were drafted to secure the area to be brutalising the community.The CAN chairman in the locality, Reverend Gambo Na'Allah, represented by its secretary, Reverend Aminu Weyham, said in Kwoi, the headquarters of Jaba Local Government Area of the state that the soldiers had become 'a law unto themselves, defying the plea of all constituted authority.'The soldiers had claimed that a curfew was imposed on the southern part of Kaduna State from 8.00p.m till dawn, but residents in the area said the curfew was lifted by the authorities.'Vanguard correspondent, Luka Biniyat and a reporter of the Kaduna State Media Corporation (KSMC), Mr Jacob Zango, were stopped at Kafanchan the same day by 9.10p.m by nine soldiers commanded by a young lieutenant. They were ordered to seat in mud water with about 50 others who were undergoing various forms of humiliation for what the soldiers said was a violation of a curfew imposed on the area.
