Gov Amosun, Asero road is time killer

Published by Tribune on Mon, 10 Oct 2011

I am sure that Governor Ibikunle OyelajaAmosun is not aware that Asero road is a killer of hours that should have been spent profitably for economic development of the state.' This was the lamentation of Mr Kola Adekunle, a car owner who was trapped in the perennial gridlock on the road that links Abeokuta to Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. The road, which apparently is a busy one, also leads to Odeda, the headquarters of Odeda Local Government Area of the state, while those who are resident at Asero Estate, Fajol, Obantoko, Camp, where the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta is sited and Osiele, the home of the Federal College of Education, are at the mercy of the less than 10 metres bad portion of the road in front of Olikoye Ransome Kuti Memorial Hospital. The bad surface forces motorists to go dead slow through the bad portion which is always retaining water and this informs a long queue of vehicles which extends up to Obantoko, while reckless and impatient drivers throw caution to the wind by forming as many as three illegal lanes entering Abeokuta city.Mr Suraju Alani, a taxi driver, lamented to the Community News that, 'the bad spot that is inflicting this unnecessary punishment on us is not up to 10 metres, yet government has not deemed it fit to repair it.'An anonymous civil servant lamented that 'both the Controller of Federal Government Operations, who is to see to the mending of the road, and the state government, whose people make use of the road are snoring.'If a civil servant will not perform his duty for which he is paid, why can't the government force him to justify the salary he earns monthly',' he queried. He added that there was no economic sense in allowing a less than 10 metres bad portion of road to waste workers and students time on daily basis. He, therefore, appealed to Governor Amosun to pay a visit to the place as early as 6.00 a.m. to see how people struggle to pass through, 'maybe, this will make him to pity us and get the road repaired.
