Abattoir residents laud FERMA

Published by Tribune on Mon, 10 Oct 2011

Hausa community in AbattoirArea of old Ota Road, Agege, on the outskirts of Lagos, have commended the management of Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) for the construction of new drainage in the area to curb flooding in the community.FERMA, in its bid to put an end to constant flooding of some federal roads in Lagos State, had commenced rehabilitation of collapsed drainage on the roads.Speaking with Community News on the construction of the new drainage system, Alhaji Rabi Mohammed, a resident of Abattoir, explained that old Ota road which used to be a major road linking Lagos and Abeokuta in the 80s, was neglected when the Federal Government constructed the new Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. He lamented that the poor state of the drainage system was a major challenge to the residents, especially whenever it rained.'The FERMA intervention is a major breakthrough for the people living in this community. We have been living with the problem of flooding and this drainage construction would put an end to the problem,' he said.Another resident, Alhaja Wosilat Mohammed, commended the Federal Government for the intervention, saying 'we had lost hope until we saw construction workers demolishing the old drainage. It was a big relief for us. We are very happy. The intervention would help reduce flooding in our area. I lost food stuff worth N200,000 recently when water from the damaged drainage overflowed and entered my shop. It was a big loss. We thank the Federal Government for the gesture'.In his own contribution, another trader at Abattoir Market, Mallam Sheu Gazali, said the construction of the drainage was a welcome development. He appealed to the construction company handling the project to do a good job. When Community News visited the area, community leaders were seen discussing with the contractor. 'We are working to ensure that the construction work is well done. This is a big opportunity and we must on our part ensure that we monitor the people working on the project to ensure that they do a good job,' Gazali said.
