Ugborhen people allege marginalisation

Published by Tribune on Mon, 10 Oct 2011

The Ugborhen District which comprises of Ikeresan, Ugborhen and Ugbukurusu communities in Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State have called on the state government to accelerate the development of the area which they alleged has been neglected and marginalized since the inception of democratic rule in 1999.The Okpe people made the call recently when the three communities came together to appraise the development of the area in the last 12 years of democratic rule.Speaking on behalf of the communities while welcoming the newly posted principal of the re-opened Adaka Grammar School Ugborhen, Deacon Etaborunu Tanshi, said that the three communities needed government attention through developmental projects. He noted that the people of these communities have no roads, hospital and infrastructure development.Deacon Tanshi hinted that in spite of the fact that Ugborhen contributed immensely to the coffers of the Delta State government being the highest oil producing community in Sapele Local Government, area, it has nothing to show for it.He noted that the only secondary school for the communities was closed down for years until it was reopened in 1998 due to the frantic effort of Ugborhen Elite Forum.According to him, 'we need the presence of government to be felt in Ugborhen because we are part of the state. We are striving to live as there is no meaningful development in the area. The only road leading to the community from Elume Junction was abandoned after Okuodede by the local contractor while SPDC health centre has not been commissioned for use'Deacon Tanshi who is the chairman of Ugborhen District Education Committee, disclosed that Orhue I, Orodje of Okpe Kingdom, has expressed interest in education matters and has directed that Education Committee be inaugurated in the District and all towns/villages throughout Okpe kingdom, adding that they were expected to work closely with the primary and secondary schools and other education agencies to improve the learning of the child.Responding on behalf of staff and management of Adaka Grammar School, the principal, Mr. Ogheneovo Ogbodu said that the elaborate reception accorded him and the staff was highly commendable, adding that it was a historical event that would encourage them to promote high educational standard in the school. He particularly thanked Ugborhen District Education Committee for their effort and commitment.
