SSANU eyes univeristy council membership seat

Published by Tribune on Sun, 10 Aug 2014

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has declared its resolve to push for the inclusion of its members in the governing councils of universities in the country. The union equally alleged that registrars of universities have been reduced to mere clerks, while bursars are simply made to hand over monies, adding that university administration now revolves round only vice-chancellors and governing councils.Speaking at the 49th Quarterly Western Zonal Meeting of SSANU hosted by the Ambrose Alli University chapter, Ekpoma, Edo State, the deputy national president of the union, Comrade Emmanuel Baniwole, said SSANU intends to argue its case at the forthcoming National Education Summit.According to the union leader, SSANU members have being marginalised in the university system due to lack of representatives at the governing councils, pointing out that registrars were just made to take minutes during council meetings, with no right to make contributions. He said administration of the universities is heavily skewed towards academic staff, as the entire nine internal members of governing councils were allocated to the academic staff. The chairman, western zone of SSANU, Comrade Alfred Jimoh, decried poor funding of education by the government which he said had tremendously reduced the standard of education in the country. He said SSANU was proposing a National Education Summit with all stakeholders in attendance, with a view to finding solution to the problems bedeviling education in Nigeria. The branch chairman AAU-SSANU, Comrade Etafia Dako, said the branch has been able to better the lot of staff through its welfare scheme, just as it has been able to fight for the creation of the positions of Senior Deputy Registrar (SDR) and Senior Deputy Bursar (SDB).
