The Nigerian traditional heritage

Published by Tribune on Tue, 11 Oct 2011

FOR almost three decades or thereabout, Sir Shina Peters and his erstwhile bosom friend, Chief Segun Adewale, have been at loggerheads yet, no president ' past or present of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN) took it upon him/herself to mediate in this age-long rift which patently resulted in the premature death of juju music.Chief Obafemi Awolowo's mandate was rigged in 1979 by some faceless politicians. Come to think of how belated eulogies filled the mouth of the 'well-wishers' upon the transition of the late sage. What about the condolence messages that were written for mere fun.Till date, the killers of the late Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige, are yet to be unravelled; ditto the killers of Pa Alfred Rewane, Chief MKO Abiola, Dele Giwa, among others; whereas the perpetrators are still in our midst!Today, the immediate past governor of Oyo State, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, is one man whose name and picture some politicians would not want to see on the pages of newspapers. His eight years at the helm of affairs of Oyo State, to this set of people, is but a waste but physical infrastructure abound to tell the truth. But with all these hullabaloo here and there, only the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo knows and can rightly identifies his bonafide 'sheep'. Nigeria, surely, will surmount all her obstacles; but not until we, among other things, purge ourselves of this negative traditional heritage. God bless Nigeria.Alex Olabisi Amao, Alawo Compound, Aje, Ogbomoso.
