Published by Tribune on Tue, 11 Oct 2011

The two unions inthe oil and gas sector - the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG)and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) have vowed to continue and further intensify the ongoing strike in Warri Zone, because of the attitude of Governors Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State and Ibrahim Idris of Kogi State. The unions said they could not call off the ongoing strike affecting Delta, Edo, Ondo and Kogi states, despite the intervention of Delta State governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, because they were forced to intensify the strike by the three governors.'On Saturday, Delta State governor, Dr Uduaghan, tried to intervene and we met with him. We discussed at length but we told him that we had to report back to our people. The strike has to go on because other state governors are yet to respond,' the unions said in a statement issued under NUPENGASSAN and signed by the Media and Information Officer of PENGASSAN, Comrade Babatunde Oke.The statement, entitled: 'Details of the three-day warning strike in Warri Zone by NUPENGASSAN,' further said that: 'As the chief security officers of their states, we want the state governors to evolve the political will and other instruments within their reach to stop crime.'Let them use the security votes they are getting to combat crime,'the statement added.Comrade Oke said the three-day warning strike was jointly organised by NUPENG and PENGASSAN in Warri Zone which covers four states, Delta, Kogi, Edo and Ondo.
