Motorists lament poor state of Ibadan-Iwo road

Published by Tribune on Tue, 11 Oct 2011

Motorists plying Ibadan-Iwo road, Oyo State, have lamented the poor condition of the road, few years after its re-construction, just as the contractor who handled the project shunned an invitation by the state House of Assembly. Most of the motorists, especially commercial bus operators, who claimed that they had been plying the road more than two years ago, said that it was unfortunate that the road did not stand the test of time. They argued that the condition of the road which they described as death trap, was as a result of high level of politics introduced by the past administration in the state.Tracing the history of the road, a commercial bus operator, Mukaila Alao, told Community News that the road was initially awarded by the Senator Rashidi Ladoja administration to Aresco Construction Company, while former Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala led administration on resumption of office threatened to cancel the contract. But after serious contacts and counter contacts, he said the contract was reviewed and the result was what the people were seen today.According to him, the journey from Iwo road to Olodo which should not be more than 15 minutes now take between 30 and 40 minutes due to the poor state of the road. The commercial bus operator specifically mentioned a particular junction opposite a public primary school where motorists have to spend at least 20 minutes in traffic.Meanwhile, the state Commissioner for Works, Alhaji Yunus Akintunde, on Thursday appeared before the House of Assembly on the bad state of the road where he told the lawmakers that all efforts to get the contractor had proved abortive. The commissioner who disclosed that the ministry had an agreement with the contractor, said he (the contractor) had failed to honour both the ministry's and the assembly's invitations.Reacting, the Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Honourable Monsurat Sunmonu, directed that a bench warrant be issued against the contractor so that he would appear before the house today.
