Eagles living on past glory, says Guinean official

Published by Guardian on Tue, 11 Oct 2011

Syli Stars get $2,000 for qualifyingWITH Nigerians now divided over the Nigeria Football Federation's (NFF) alleged plan to sack coach Samson Siasia after his failure to qualify the Super Eagles for next year's Cup of Nations, an official of Syli Nationale of Guinea, Ndlaye Traore, has described Nigeria as a people feasting on past glories.Traore, who is Head of Communications of the Guinean side, told journalists in Abuja after the Siasia-led Eagles were rounded up in last weekend's qualifier that the team was 'finished' and only living on their past feats. A 2-2 draw in Abuja ended Nigeria's dream of appearing in the 2012 Nations Cup to be co-hosted by Gabon/Equatorial Guinea. It is the first time the country's flag will be missing in the 'African World Cup' since 1986.According to Traore, the Nigerian team is 'so predictable in their approach to matches now that other African countries no longer entertain fears when they want to play Nigeria. It is high time Nigeria went back to the drawing board and rediscover its past glory.'It is a shame that Nigeria can no longer produce the likes of Kanu Nwankwo, Austin Okocha, Daniel Amokachi and other good players who were a force to reckon with in African football in the past. I think the players are finished, as they are no longer the Super Eagles they used to be, and I feel so sorry for the fans.'The official added: 'If our players are able to get half of the money the Nigerian players are being promised, they will be ready to win the championship in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. We only gave them $2,000 as winning bonus, but your players were promised $5,000.
