11 killed in auto crashes in Ibadan

Eleven people,among whom weretwo school children, were on Tuesday killed in a multiple accident in Ibadan, while another 16 others sustained injuries in separate locations in the city.The first accident took place on the Ibadan-Ife road around 2.47a.m., while the second one occurred at Boluwaji area, on the Ibadan-Lagos road around 7.30a.m. during which about five vehicles were damaged.Nigerian Tribune learnt that a Toyota Hiace vehicle, with registration number QX 362 LSR (Lagos), with 18 passengers going to Abuja, abandoned his lane to face the traffic coming from Ife.The Head of Operation of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Egbeda Unit command, Assistant Corps Commander Dennis Ioryina, who confirmed the incident, said that a truck, with registration number XT 134 JJJ, had broken down on the road coming from Ile-Ife, as the driver of the vehicle was trying to fix the tyre, when another truck with registration XW 511 LSR, ran into the stationed vehicle.As a result, the driver of the vehicle sustained injury and was taken to hospital, while FRSC officials were stationed on the road to ensure safety.He said the driver of the Toyota Hiace bus coming from Lagos had left his lane because of an armed robbery attack and he ran into the two stationary vehicles, adding that the accident would have been averted if the driver had kept to his lane.He said that immediately after the accident, FRSC officials were on the ground to rescue the victims, saying that seven of the 18 passengers died on the spot, while 14 sustained injuries.The FRSC boss said that the injured victims were taken to Axion and the University College Hospital (UCH), while the corpses of those who died were deposited at the Catholic Hospital, Ikire, Osun State.In a related development, four people, including two school children, lost their lives in an auto crash on the Ibadan-Lagos road.The accident, Nigerian Tribune learnt, involved two petrol tankers and a Volkswagen commercial vehicle, with registration number XA 760 BLR (Gombe) and XU 440 SAK and UZ 758 KJA (Lagos).The two tankers were trying to overtake each other when they both swerved in different directions; one to the left and the other to the right.The one to the right had run into the commercial vehicle which led to the death of the two school children and another person.The driver of the other tanker was also said to have died on the spot.
