We never indicted Buhari 'Panel

Published by Tribune on Wed, 12 Oct 2011

THE presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), General Muhammadu Buhari, was never indicted in the report of the investigation panel on the 2011 election violence and civil disturbances submitted to President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday.A section of the media, in their reports, alleged that the former head of state was indicted by the panel for allegedly making provocative utterances when he asked the electorate to guard their votes. But, the chairman of the panel, Dr Sheikh Ahmed Lemu, in an interview with some journalists in Abuja, on Tuesday, disputed the report, describing it as misleading.'We never indicted Buhari. We said the commission is not out to indict anybody, we are not a judicial panel. It was a shock to us to hear or read that we blamed Buhari for the violence.'Definitely, no matter how good your idea or suggestion, somebody must criticise you. What we said exonerated him (Buhari) we made it clear to the president that we are not out to indict anybody,' he said.Speaking further, the chairman said his panel met with General Buhari, where the CPC presidential candidate disclosed that he was a victim of the post-election violence. On the recommendation of the panel, Justice Lemu said 'if what we recommended in the executive summary is implemented, I have no doubt that this country will see a positive change.'He said he had been pro-human rights all his life as a practising Muslim, 'who believes no one is perfect apart from God.
