FG set to pay N25bn to deceased police officers' families

Following theuntold hardshipbeing suffered by families of over 400 policemen who died while on duty due to non-payment of their group life benefits, the Federal Government is now poised to pay over N25 billion to the beneficiaries.The policemen, who were either killed by armed robbers, mob attacks or motor accidents, are yet to be paid from July 1, 2004 to February 29, 2010.Consequently, the Federal Government has directed the relations and next of kins of the deceased police officers and men who died in active service to report to the nearest command and formation insurance officers.In a police signal to all state police commands and FCT, those beneficiaries or next of kins within this category should come with genuine evidence of death and any other document relevant to the death.Nigerian Tribune gathered that the armed forces were paid their arrears of group life policy recently, totaling over N15 billion.The source disclosed that the police, with high risk of death and high population of over 375 officers and men, had not been fairly treated with regards to the group life benefits.A breakdown of the figure showed that between July 1 and December 31st 2004, there was an outstanding of N3.9 billion; from January 1 to December 31st 2005, the outstanding was N3.4 billion, while from January 1 to December 2006, there was an outstanding of N3.7 billion.Also from January 1 to December 31 2007, there was an outstanding of N4.3 billion; January 1 to December 31st 2008, the outstanding was N3.1billion; January 1 to December 31, 2009, the outstanding was N3.7 billion and from January 1 to February 29, 2010, the outstanding was N1.6 billion.
