Published by Guardian on Wed, 12 Oct 2011

NIGERIA'S No.1 tennis player, Henry Atseye, will not take part in today's final of the Sir Olateru Olagbegi Tennis Championship after he pulled out from the quarter-final game against Kehinde Alade.Atseye, who twisted his ankle in the game, said he took the right decision by opting out in the second set of the first game, adding that he would have to rest his ankle to be fit for the Governor's Cup, which begins at the weekend.'I had to stop playing because I didn't want to aggravate the injury,' he explained. 'I won the first set but had to retire in the second. What is important for me is to be fit for the Governor's Cup.'The outcome of the game was a surprise result for many tennis lovers, who were at the Akure Stadium to watch the best of Nigerian tennis players showcase their skill. According to coach Mayowa Osho, who spoke yesterday, it was a big upset to see Atseye, who was title favourite, beaten in the quarter-final.'Apart from the defeat of Atseye, there were other surprises, which is good for tennis. Many players have proved that they have what it takes to play at the top level,' he observed. 'This competition will also help prepare the players for the Governor's Cup.'Osho added that it was interesting working with the kids on Monday and that he was impressed with the way some of them got the rudiments of the game. In the first semi-final today, Alade will take on Enosoregbe Clifford while Madueke Nonso takes on Abdulmumini Babalola in the second.
