Leave Siasia alone, Olaiya cautions NFF

Published by Guardian on Wed, 12 Oct 2011

EVEN as most soccer-loving fans are calling for the sack of Super Eagles' coach, Samson Siasia, following Nigeria's surprise miss of next year's Nations Cup, a former board member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Adeleke Olaiya, thinks the technical crew should not be sent packing.Olaiya hinged his argument on the fact that another round of Nations Cup qualification would commence in few months time. He said: 'Leave Siasia alone. Despite the fact that the Super Eagles was eliminated by Guinea from the 2012 Nations cup, the team and the coaching crew should be left intact in view of the fact that another Nations Cup is around the corner. Where do we start from again''The West Africa School Sports Union (WASSU) president emphasised that the only way out of the myriad of problems dwarfing Nigerian football was to pay attention to school sports, which he said would be the platform where players could be unearthed and groomed. He added: 'The only permanent solution and for the sake of the future is school sports, which we must all pay attention to. It is the foundation, so let us begin to build from the basics. All the three tiers of government must wake up to school sports and pay due attention to it. It is the only panacea to genuine sports development.'Let us begin to spread our tentacles to schools to catch them young. That is my sermon to all countries in West Africa under WASSU. All sports - all Olympic sports must start from primary school through to secondary school. We are now saying it again. We should invest in the future of our children now in school. It is what you sow that you reap.
