Empowering youth through craft

A total theatre company, Drumsview Concept, established with the aim of preserving Africa's rich artistic and cultural heritage, recently oraganised a one-day workshop entitled Craft, easier done than said, at the Artists Village, National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos.At the workshop, participants, mostly teens, underwent training in making and repairing some musical instruments such as Djembe drum, Sekere and Maracas.The project coordinator, Oyebisi Tosin, said youth empowerment was very important to the organisers. To be a complete artist, he said, would entail knowing a bit about certain instruments peculiar to the expression of one's artistic prowess.According to Tosin, failure to learn about the tools and materials artists use or need to make a good production, has impacted negatively on their creative outputs. 'We have taken on the Djembe drum this time because it is the most popular African drum while sekere is the most vital in drum ensemble, mostly among the Yoruba. Subsequent editions will be dealing with other instruments,' he said.He explained further that apart from knowing about the instruments as an artist, one could do that for a living.
