12 bodies recovered from collapsed Plateau building

A rescue team comprising of the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Nigerian Red Cross and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corpse (NSCDC) on Tuesday recovered 12 bodies from the rubles of the collapsed residential house in Jos, capital of Plateau State.The combined team had on Monday evening recovered 4 bodies.On the resumption of the search- and- rescue on Tuesday morning, the team discovered six more bodies including those of the owner of the three- storey apartment Alhaji Kabiru Nalele popularly known as Sariki (King) within the environment.The Nation learnt the owner of the apartment visited as usual when the building collapsed killing him, his two wives and nine others.It was learnt the three- storey apartments ground floor was used shops while the two floors were used as residential.The ground floor contained a pharmaceutical store that deals with retail and wholesale drugs.The store was owned and managed by two daughters of the owner of the apartment.One of the sympathisers said: Some neighbors who came to the pharmacy to buy drugs were among the people trapped in the building, some of them died, some of them that survived were rescued and rushed to the hospital.Mrs Junni Bala, Director of Search and Rescue, Plateau State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) said: The two-storey building located at Butcher Line, Dilimi in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State fell at about 6pm local time trapping many.Read Also:Seven dead, one injured in Jos building collapseSEMARescuers recovered four corpses on Monday night from the rubble before discovering six others on Tuesday.Four other people were critically injured in the disasterMany of the sympathisers expressed anger over the failure of state government to enforce strict regulations on residential and business buildings in the city centre.The Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB), the agency in charge of town planning, has ordered residents occupying any building in the city that has no government approval to vacate immediately.The agency said it will utilise all available laws to embark on demolition of any building in the city that has no government approval.It said buildings structurally defective as well as those badly constructed will be affected during the demolition exercise.Deputy Governor, Prof Sunny Tyoden was at the scene of the collapse.He expressed sympathies with relations of the victims.He also assured residents that government will take necessary action to standardise buildings in the state.The deputy governor directed all the agencies responsible for town planning in the state to go round the state capital, identify poorly constructed buildings and bring them down before they kill innocent people.
