US to offer Nigerian students $3m

The United Statesgovernment saidNigerian students participating in its Educational Advising Centre during the 2011/ 2012 academic year will receive nearly three million dollars in financial aid and scholarship.This is coming as the number of Nigerians studying in the US is said to have risen to over 6,500.The students are currently studying at over 733 institutions in all the 50 states of the United States and the District of Columbia.Describing the gesture as, 'quite an impressive feat' in Abuja at the 2011 annual college and career fair organised by the US embassy, the US Deputy Chief of Mission to Nigeria, James McAnulty, noted that institutions of higher learning in the US remain popular to Nigerian students.He quoted the US Institute of International Education as saying that Nigeria sends more students to the United States than any other country in sub-Saharan Africa.The envoy maintained that Nigerians not only contribute to the diversity of US academic institutions, but make lasting contributions to the Nigerian society when they return to Nigeria after completing their studies.
