2011 LG election: ACN jettisons protests by aggrieved members, presents flags to candidates 'Lagos PDP warns SIEC, ACN against rigging

Published by Tribune on Thu, 13 Oct 2011

Candidates of theAction Congress ofNigeria (ACN) in the forthcoming local government election in Lagos State were, on Wednesday, presented the flags to represent the party in the election, in spite of the protest by some members against the nominations of some of candidates.Aggrieved members from the 57 local government areas of the state had protested against the nomination of some candidates, but the party leadership, at a stakeholders' meeting, dismissed their petitions, describing it as frivolous.Instead of heeding the calls for the replacement of the affected candidates, the leadership of the party, led by the former governor of the state, Senator Bola Tinubu, at a rally held inside Onikan Stadium, presented them with the party flags and asked for the supports of other members. However, noting the relevance of the forthcoming election to the party, Tinubu stressed the needs for its members to forget their differences and work together as a formidable team. Also, during the ceremony, the former governor stressed the needs for the local government administrators to build on the developmental foundation already laid by the state governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola.According to him, Fashola had been able to turn Lagos State into a mega city, adding that the state had become foreign investors friendly.Meanwhile, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Mr Luqman Ajose, on Wednesday, said any plan by the ACN to rig the forthcoming local government election would be resisted. This is just as he advised Fashola to steer clear of any act capable of tarnishing his image.Making this known in an interview with newsmen, the former Lagos Island Local Government chairman said the PDP was keenly contesting the election in the state, adding that 'we are going to spring surprises.'Also, he warned the State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) against being used by the ACN.
