Health workers charged on improved living condition for Nigerians

Published by Tribune on Thu, 13 Oct 2011

Following Nigeria's low life expectancy and poor health indexes, health workers have, again, been told to contribute their quota by reversing the trend and ensuring Nigeria meets the health-related millennium development goals.Giving the charge was Dr Jesse Otegbayo, Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, University College Hospital, Ibadan at the joint graduation ceremony of federally funded schools at the hospital.Dr Otegbayo, who remarked that Nigerian's life expectancy of 48 years was far lower than that of Japan currently put at 90 years, stated that 'everywhere (healthworkers) we find ourselves, we should all contribute our best. Even when our best is not sufficient, at least, the effort would have been made.'The medical expert who stated that programmes in the federally funded schools were being upgraded to provide higher qualifications, charged them to contribute positively to the image of the hospital.Director, Institute of Education, University of Ibadan and the special guest of honour at the occasion, Professor Mac Araromi, while declaring that University of Ibadan would not compromise standard, noted that 'everywhere in the world, our products are commendable and are able to hold their heads high among their peers.'He told the graduating students that a lot had been invested in them, adding that they should give good returns to the nation's healthcare system, their teachers and the hospital which trained them.Dr Christiana Sowunmi, the deputy director, Federally Funded Schools, charged the 81 graduands, to utilise the knowledge they gained to define their future.
