Ara-Ekiti calls for govt's action on collapsed bridges

Published by Tribune on Thu, 13 Oct 2011

People of Ara-Ekiti in Ijero Local Government Area of Ekiti State have called for urgent repair of two bridges in the area which have collapsed.Community News gathered that the bridges in Oke Adura Anaye and Odo Ara Obatedo caved in under the pressure of rains, thereby cutting off the areas from other parts of the community.Residents of the community lamented that the development has detracted from the quality of life in the area as their economic and social activities have been adversely affected.According to Mr Jacod Ajayi, the rains have rendered the road and bridges impassable, saying that something urgent must be done by the council administration to reverse the trend.Ajayi said the people were appealing to the Chairman of Ijero Local Government Area, Mr. Jonathan Atibioke, to mobilise the works department to, at least, make the bridges passable as the people were now cut off.Another resident of the community, Mr. Isaac Afolayan, decried the development, saying that commercial vehicles and even commercial motorcycles had abandoned the roads, thereby making the area 'a kind of no-go area.'Afolayan expressed regret that the lack of transportation to and from the community had almost crippled economic and social activities in Ara 'as the roads are impassable and vehicles and commercial motorcycles (okada) will not go to the area.'He pleaded with the state government to come to their help in Ara, pointing out that the council administration might have its hands full at the moment. He, however, noted that 'the local government administration can still do something by making the bridges passable before a more concrete job could be done.'Authorities of the local government administration could not be reached at the time of going to press for their comments and reaction to the call of the members of the community.
