Transfer power of attorney to us

Published by Tribune on Thu, 13 Oct 2011

The Chairman, Abia Land Use Allocation Committee, Chief Nzenwata Mbakwe, has urged government to transfer the authority of issuance of power of attorney to traditional rulers. He said that such transfers to handle land administration would reduce numerous litigations and boost the country's mass housing policy.Mbakwe made the call in Umuahia, Abia State recently when speaking with newsmen.Mbakwe, is the traditional ruler of Umuosu Okaiuga Nkwoegwu Autonomous community in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia.``Most courts in the country are flooded with land related cases because government that is in charge of our lands does not have the history of the land, but the traditional rulers do.``Let government transfer the powers to handle land matters to traditional rulers and not customary courts, then we will begin to witness many people having land to build and farm.''Mbakwe also advised local governments to go into mass housing projects to help provide accommodation for the majority of Nigerians who lived in substandard houses.``In London, it is the local administration that provides houses through the mass housing policy for those that are yet to secure jobs.''On the problem of building collapse and construction of houses on unapproved locations, Mbakwe said that such acts portended great danger for not only the house owner, but to the public as well.``Building on waterways and other unapproved places will not make Nigeria grow; it will rather result in unimaginable losses.``If government says remove this building, people start shouting it is not good. Such action by government is in the interest of the masses because they often turn victims of disasters resulting from building collapse,'' he pointed out.
