IN the sub-cultural context of the Yoruba, the tears of the youth and able bodied, strong men, portended tragedy for a town, city or settlement. It signposted the tragic for such city or settlement. When strongmen weep in contemporary Nigeria, it is difficult to fathom what the augury means.GENERAL Muhammadu Buhari, for instance wept profusely, when he bade farewell to electoral battles in the intriguing democratic field of Nigeria. But IBB, the self-styled military president of Nigeria had always wept at funerals. It will be recalled that he wept profusely and inconsolably at the funeral of his late wife, the late Maryam Babangida who brought some sort of panache to first ladyship.HE was also reported to have wept recently at the funeral of his compliant vice-president, Augustus Aikhomu, in Irrua, Esan Central Local Government Area of Edo State. The media reported that IBB stayed indoors during the interment and it is not clear how the reporters got to know that he wept. Were they indoors with him as he lamented'AGAIN, it is not clear what IBB wept for if he did weep at all. Did he weep that Aikhomu, a trained Naval chief eventually paid the ultimate price at 71 when the life expectancy of an average Nigerian male is about 42, or that despite their reign of eight years, it had to take a democratically-elected Governor Adams Oshiomhole to plead for his immortalisation by naming Irrua Specialist Hospital which Aikhomu facilitated during his period in office after him
