Phillies' Jonathan Papelbon Records Save No. 100 with the Team

After shutting down the Washington Nationals in a 1-2-3 ninth inning Tuesday night, Jonathan Papelbon recorded his 33rd save of the season, which doubled as his 100th while wearing a Philadelphia Phillies uniform.Per Elias Sports Bureau (via ESPN.com), Papelbon is the first closer to record 200 saves with a team in one league, and 100 saves with a club in the other. Over seven seasons with the Boston Red Sox, the right-hander collected a total of 219 saves.Papelbon's highest single-season save markcame in 2008 with the Red Sox, when the righty earned his third of four straight All-Star Game appearances. He logged 41 saves that year while posting a 2.34 ERA and 0.95 WHIP.Outside of the limited workload in his debut 2005 season, Papelbon has recorded 30 or more saves in eight of the last nine seasons, falling short only in 2013, when he notched29.Papelbon's career save total is third among active players, as he trails only Joe Nathan of the Detroit Tigers (369) and Francisco Rodriguez of the Milwaukee Brewers (343).The Phillies' closer is also making his way up the all-time ranks, as he's currently tied for 17th overall with Todd Jones, who played with eight different teams over 16 MLB seasons. Papelbon could conceivably pass Jose Mesa (321) and Roberto Hernandez (326) if he has a productive final month.Under contract through 2015 (with an option for 2016), the 33-year-old Papelbon should be able to climb into the top 10 in careersaves provided he matches the numbers he's accustomed to putting up on a yearly basis.All stats courtesy of MLB.com, unless otherwise specified.
