Geoff Cameron Injury: Updates on Stoke City Defender's Status and Return

Published by Bleacher Report on Thu, 28 Aug 2014

Stoke City's bid to qualify for the third round of the 2014-15 Capital One Cup became a little harder when U.S. International Geoff Cameron was forced to leave the pitch with an injury against Portsmouth on Wednesday, just before the end of the first half. The club's official Twitter account announced the news:The 29-year-old was given a surprise start against Portsmouth, and as shared by Goal's Ives Galarcep, Stoke likely made the decision with an eye on a potential transfer:A natural fit in defence, he was shifted one row further forward and left a solid impression against Portsmouth, as his team took the lead in the 16th minute through Jonathan Walters.Cameron appeared to pull a muscle just before the half and signaled to the sidelines he would be unable to continue, eventually being replaced by Steven Sidwell. He was frequently mentioned as a transfer target for a host of clubs in the past weeks, as he struggled to secure a spot in Stoke's starting XI. According to the Daily Mirror's Ed Malyon, the player himself was also keen on a move. While it's unclear whether or not Cameron's injury is serious at this point, one can assume the defender would have powered through the pain if he could, knowing a potential transfer could depend on his performance against Portsmouth.Any long-term injury would almost certainly ruin his chances of securing a move before the end of the 2014 summer window, and with few opportunities available for him in Stoke's starting XI, Cameron could find the market for his services drying up quickly.Follow @ReverschPassRead more World Football news on BleacherReport.com
