Ebola scare hits Bayelsa

Published by Tribune on Fri, 29 Aug 2014

Sequel to the confirmed case of Ebola in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, that led to the death of Dr Enemoah, who contacted the disease from a diplomat that had contact with Mr Patrick Sawyer who died of Ebola virus, people of Bayelsa State have come under fear over the possible spread of the virus to the state. The news that spread like wildfire hit the state as early as 8:00a.m., creating panic among the people of the state, primarily because Bayelsa was created from Rivers State and they both share boundary on land and on the waterways. There is palpable fear in the state, as people are praying that none of the over 70 persons under surveillance should sneak to Bayelsa either by road or the connecting routes on the waterways. The apprehension is heightened, as some Bayelsans have their relations residing in Port Harcourt.Bayelsans, who hitherto felt secured now carry their sanitisers and avoided handshake.A respondent, Mr Famous Erepagamo, told the Nigerian Tribune that 'both states are sister states with shared boundaries,' even as he appealed to government to re-invigorate medical surveillance and checks at the state's tow gate.Another respondent, Mrs Juliet Enebidou, told our correspondent that there was the need to also 'strengthen surveillance at the waterways entry port to the state,' even as she noted that it must be done with urgency.Efforts to get the state Commissioner for Health, Mr Owei proved abortive, but the information officer of the ministry said that the ministry was poised to hold a stakeholders interactive session to allay the tension over the possible spread of Ebola virus from Port Harcourt to Bayelsa State.
