Bishop is Enugu deputy gov

Published by Tribune on Fri, 29 Aug 2014

THE Enugu State House of Assembly, on Thursday, confirmed the Presiding Bishop of Christ Ascension Church, Ugwuaji, Awkunanaw, Enugu, Reverend Ifeanyichukwu Nwoye, as the newly appointed deputy governor of the state. This was sequel to a letter by Governor Sullivan Chime, presenting Bishop Nwoye to the assembly as a successor to his erstwhile deputy, Sunday Onyebuchi, for screening and confirmation.Bishop Nwoye, a former Commissioner for Environment, hails from Nara, in Nkanu East Local Government Area of the state, the same town with his immediate predecessor.Speaker of the assembly, Eugene Odo, read the governor's letter on the floor of the assembly.Honourable Odo had told the assembly that the state would not operate in a vacuum, without having a deputy govenor since the former deputy had been impeached.Apparently heeding to the speaker's advise, the assembly hurriedly proceeded on break and returned to confirm Nwoye as deputy governor of the state. However, before clearing the deputy governor designate, Leader of the assembly, Honourable S.K.E Udeh-Okoye, stated that Bishop Nwoye had already been in government and was not somebody, whose credentials would be questioned by the assembly, hence, he should be cleared immediately.A member representing Nkanu East Constituency, where Nwoye hails from, urged the assembly to ask the new deputy governor to take a bow since he was a known figure, who had held and was still holding government positions. It will be recalled that Onyebuchi was impeached as deputy governor last Tuesday, following the assembly's adoption of the report of the investigative panel that tried him and found him guilty on the two-count count-charge of misconduct in office and disrespect to the constituted authority levelled against him by the lawmakers.
