Poly Consult officials arrested for organising fake NIMN exam

Published by Tribune on Mon, 21 Mar 2011

Men of the Oyo State Police Command last Wednesday arrested two officials of Poly Consult, a subsidiary of Poly Ventures Limited, for allegedly conducting illegal professional examination and collecting money under pretence of admitting members into the National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria (NIMN).The arrest of the officials, Mr Sanusi Gabriel and Alhaji L.A. Abdullahi,  was based on a petition titled Re- obtaining Money by False Pretenses and Fraudulent Misrepresentation of National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria dated December 6, 2010 and  signed by counsel to the institute, Mr C.H. Nwoke and addressed  to the state police commissioner, Baba Adisa Bolanta. In the petition the institute alleged that the officials, despite all efforts to make them comply with the rules and regulations guiding the institute, had continued to dupe unsuspecting members of he public. While noting that the institute which was established by a parliamentary Act in 2003, had  the sole, exclusive powers and responsibility to regulate and control the practice of the marketing profession in Nigeria.According to him, it had come to the knowledge of the institute that some persons were obtaining money from unsuspecting prospective members of the institute on the false pretence that they would conduct examinations of the institute for the students for admission into membership of the institute. He said information reaching the institute showed that such illegal and fraudulent examination was currently going on at the Poly Consult, The Polytechnic, Ibadan being organized by a group of people based in Ibadan. The institutes director of Membership Service, Mr. Ayoola Akomolafe, who led police detectives and other members of the institute to the Poly Consult on Wednesday told newsmen that the arrested people were operating illegally without the consent of the institute. He said the management of the polytechnic had been informed about the situation, hence the decision to storm the place to arrest the officials and stop the 2010 professional examination still in progress. When Nigerian Tribune got to Poly Consult, four students were seen writing the examination which started on December 6 and expected to end on December 10, 2010.He called on members of the institute to put its house in order in the interest of the profession. When contacted the state police commissioner, Bolanta, confirmed the receipt of the petition and said that the matter was being investigated.
