How did some drug traffickers load 50bags of cannabis sativa in a 3000 litre water tank This is the riddle the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Minna, Niger state is trying to solve. One Nduka Adam had already been arrested in connection with the crime, while two others are on the run.According to Crime and Security findings, Nduka Adam and his co travellers had at Ogbesse near Akure, the Ondo State capital, loaded the hard drugs into the water tank with Sokoto State as their destination.Nduka Adam who was the driver of the vehicle with registration number CM923JJJ in which the water tank containing the Indian hemp was placed initially denied that he knew the content of the water tank but later confessed that he went to eat when the hard drug was packed into the tank.He said they were not detected on their way from Akure to Lagos because a bunker was constructed at the bottom of the vehicle where the drugs were neatly packed to avoid being detected.Nduka who claimed to be a timber lorry driver but lost the job and was drafted into the drug business by his friends said he used to collect N15,000 apart from the money for the fuelling of the vehicle. For the aborted Sokoto state trip, Nduka was paid the same amount and was also given N20,000 to purchase fuel.It was learnt that the trio had managed to pass through all the security check points from Akure until they got to Jebba, Niger State before luck ran out on them. When we got to Jebba, NDLEA men asked us to stop, they asked us the content of the water tank, we explained that it was part of the equipment we were taking to Sokoto for the drilling of a borehole. The security men were not satisfied and they insisted on checking the vehicle, it was at this stage that Lukman and the other man ran away and I was arrested. When the tank was searched, bags of substances suspected to be Indian hemp were seen neatly arranged in it .State Commander of the NDLEA, Alhaji Abdul Abdullahi, who confirmed the story said the agency was still at a loss as to how the 50 bags of the hard drugs were loaded into the water tank.Abdullahi said that the agency had to cut through the tank to be able to bring out the bags of Indian hemp, saying you can see how our people use their ingenuity for wrong things.Abdullahi said while the vehicle was being brought to Minna it broke down in Katreggi, some 40 kilometers from the Niger State capital, wondering also how the traffickers managed to cross the terrible road from Jebba to Bida.We will get other members of the gang no matter how long it will take us, Abdullahi said adding that we have been able to show them that despite their ability to come up with new strategies to traffic drugs, we are always one step ahead of them. The Commander said that in the last five months of this year, the agency has been able to arrest 41 suspects and secured 18 convictions while 4 others were undergoing rehabilitation. He said that the forthcoming general elections could be responsible for the increase in the sales and consumption of hard drugs because some desperate politicians were recruiting youths as thugs and the youths smoke Indian Hemp.Abdullahi said that the agency was poised to ensure that the society was drug free and therefore urged parents to guide their wards properly so that they would not fall into wrong gangs. The Commander expressed appreciation to the state government for collaborating with the organisation and urged the public to offer valuable information to the agency so that the activities of drug traffickers would be checked.
