Edo: Ijaw communities to benefit from school transformation

Published by Tribune on Sat, 15 Oct 2011

The people of Ijaw communities in Edo State have been assured that they will benefit from the school transformation policy of the Governor Adams Oshiomhole's administration. The state Commissioner for Education, Ekpenisi Omorotionmwan, gave the assurance when he hosted the executive council of the Ijaw Political Vanguard in his office in Benin City, the state capital. The commissioner said at least 600 existing classrooms had so far been renovated while over 460 new structures had been constructed by the present administration in public schools across the state.According to Omorotionmwan, the contract for the supply of furniture to public schools had been awarded by the state government, just as he called for the massive support of Edo people for the Oshiomhole administration.Earlier, the Chairman/Leader of Ijaw Political Vanguard, Reverend Roman Ejemi, pleaded with the state government to urgently undertake the renovation/reconstruction of dilapidated schools in Ijaw-speaking communities and canvassed the creation of employment opportunities for Ijaw graduates. This came as Governor Oshiomhole approved the setting up of a visitation panel to look into the activites of the state-owned Institute of Technology and Management (ITM), Usen, in Ovia North East Local Government Area, with a view to repositioning the institute for better performance. The Commissioner for Education made this known when non-academic and senior staff unions of the institution led by Comrade Aken Samuel, paid him a courtesy visit in his office in Benin City.
