Mixed feelings greet FERMA patching of Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway

Published by Tribune on Sat, 15 Oct 2011

The ongoing efforts of the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to patch some damaged portions of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway have been received with mixed feelings by motorists plying the route.Apparently, bowing to pressure from different quarters, men of the Federal Road Maintenance Agency had started patching some damaged portions with potholes-ridden Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. The action of the FERMA is to provide momentary relief for motorists and passengers who often spend quality hours in traffic due to bad state of the road. However, while some motorists commended the efforts as a way of alleviating the problems of road users, others see it as a wasteful exercise. For instance, a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) at Iyana Ipaja in Alimosho Local Government area of the state, stated that the efforts would come to nothing as the flooding of Lagos by downpour taking place in recent time would soon wash away whatever it is done to remedy the situation.'It is unfortunate that the effort of FERMA would not yield any result now because flood would wash the overlay put on the pot holes. What FERMA needs to do now is ensure total repairs of the road. The present effort is a waste of time', Bayo Adegoke, a member of the union at Iyana Ipaja told Community News. Also, Mr Abiodun Aina, a civil servant in Ile-Epo area told Community News that the major problem confronting the road was that of collapsed drainages.'The cause of the problem of the road is that the drainages constructed as water channels have collapsed and the water now finds its way to the main road'.But a resident, Alhaja Tayo Busari, told Community News that the little efforts put to the repairs had really helped to reduce the number of hours spent on the road. 'Before the FERMA began repairs, we used to spend two hours from Oshodi to Sango, but now things are better. We move freely now'.
