AN EXCUSE PHCN CAN USE

IT suddenly went dark in the village of Newton on Trent, Lincolnshire, England, recently. Isaac Newton was born in the same Lincolnshire in 1643, but the sudden darkness was not caused by falling apples knocking the 300 villagers cold. Isaac Newton had a flash of inspiration, but the villagers of Newton on Trent groped in the dark.THE villagers grumbled about their gravitation towards the dark ages. But they were soon shown the light of uncomfortable reality. They were the victims of a dark deed.WHAT happened was that thieves stole cables supplying electricity to Newton on Trent. The cables ran for about a kilometre and the thieves stripped the poles bare. Not even a millimetre of the overhead cables was left. It was a crime the British police could not pin on Nigerians. It was too wickedly thorough. Britain is planning to send Nigerians in its prisons home to complete their terms. The Nigerians are said to be haemorrhaging the Exchequer.POWER supply has improved in some parts of Nigeria in the past few days. If supply becomes anaemic again, the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) now has one more improbable excuse to give for the depressingly unsatisfactory situation. PHCN sometimes blames snakes'it is a true son of Eve'for poor power supply, a snake or two allegedly strangling supply lines. It can now blame British cable thieves.
