TMG opposes fuel subsidy removal

Published by Guardian on Sun, 16 Oct 2011

OPPOSITION to the planned removal of subsidy on petroleum products mounted at the weekend, as the Chairman of Transition Monitoring Group (TMG), Moshood Erubami warned that the nation may be shut down if the president goes ahead with the proposition.Erubami called on Nigerians to be ready to resist the move should President Goodluck Jonathan fails to rescind its decision.'The TMG with other civil society groups will rebuff this attempt and resist taking Nigerians for granted. The country might be shut down if care is not taken as the chain of reactions on social economic and political spheres that will follow might not be predictable Nigerians would not just wait to hear the removal or feel its negative impact but must rise up to resist it, so as not to be vulnerable to a new day economic recession that may likely follow as a consequence.'He noted that the planned removal of oil subsidy would rubbish the value that would accrue to the minimum wage to be paid to the workers. The TMG boss in a statement made available to reporters said, 'It is a very wrong step taking in the wrong direction and another painful approach to Nigeria development. It is very simplistic and ironical, to think the removal of subsidy will prevent some imaginary few unpatriotic Nigerians that have been superintending on oil operations in Nigeria from further benefitting from their nefarious activities. The basis being adduced by government for the removal is not ideal, only some unpatriotic Nigerians are behind it and their reasoning is underscored by the same ironies and paradoxes that dotted past removals, which did not achieve anything beyond doubling the jeopardy of Nigerians.
