Driver jailed 5 years for car theft

A Senior Magistrates' Court inKaru, Abuja, has sentenced a 48-year-old driver, Obi John Edor of Jikwoyi Phase I, to five years imprisonment for stealing a Toyota Corolla car valued at N1.8 million.According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the second accused, David Abakpa, 42, also of Jikwoyi Phase 1 who was jointly charged with Edor pleaded not guilty to the offence.The Police Prosecutor, Pascal Njoko, told the court that the complainant, Christiana Oganya, of the State Security Service (SSS) Quarters, Abuja, reported at the Jikwoyi Police Station that the accused who was her driver dropped her at Nicon Luxuary Hotel, Abuja where she had a meeting.Njoko further told the court that the accused after dropping the complainant drove the car with registration No. EE 840 EKY away in company of Abakpa, the second accused.He added that the car was recovered in Kano in possession of Edor, after a long search.The prosecutor said that the offence contravened section 79 and 286 of the Penal Code Law.Edor pleaded guilty to the offence and prayed for mercy while Abakpa pleaded not guilty to the charge.However, Senior Magistrate Christopher Oba sentenced Edor to five years imprisonment without option of fine while Abakpa was remanded in Jikwoyi Prisons.Oba adjourned the case to October 10.In another development, one Anas Halidu, 21, on Wednesday appeared before a Magistrates' Court in Abuja, charged with conspiracy and causing bodily harm to one Abubakar Mohammed.Halidu was charged alongside Baba Kalifa, Smally Ali and one Saidu for beating Mohammed.Police Prosecutor Philip Apollos said the offence was contrary to the Penal Code Law.Apollos had told the court that on September 29, Mohammed reported the case at the Life Camp Police Station in Abuja.He said that Mohammed had gone to watch a drama at a film house when he was accosted by the accused persons.The prosecutor told the court that Mohammed sustained injuries on his head and right hand while his shirt valued at N1,500 was torn and that his Samsung handset valued at N5,500 was also taken away.The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.Magistrate Sadiat Mayana granted the accused bail in the sum of N10,000 and two sureties who must be resident within the court's jurisdiction.The case was adjourned to October 12 for hearing.
