National policy to address decline in productivity-Labour Minister

Published by Tribune on Sun, 16 Oct 2011

The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, has revealed that the recent National Policy on Productivity Measurement, when approved, will address the issues of decline in productivity in the nation's economy.Chief Wogu stated this in Abuja during a meeting with the Governor of Taraba State, Suntai Danbaba.'There are a lot of complaints about the declining productivity in the Nigerian economy and this ministry appreciates the fact that declining productivity has impacted negatively on the Nigerian economy and it falls within the purview of this ministry to develop such policy to address this malady,' Chief Wogu said. The minister added: 'This country has never had a clear-cut policy on productivity measurement. Now, we have developed a productivity module because we appreciate the fact that productivity has a lot to do with labour and a properly motivated workforce ought to be productive.'At all levels of government now, there is motivation. That is the reason why we presented that policy first before the Federal Executive Council. We were asked to take it before the National Economic Council because it is going to affect government at the sub-national level which are states and local governments.'Chief Wogu commended Governor Danbaba for ensuring industrial peace and harmony in his state which he said will create a favourable environment for economic growth and development. The minister expressed appreciation to the governor for implementing the N18,000 minimum wage in the state for effective industrial relations and administrationGovernor Danbaba commended the minister on the presentation of the policy to the National Economic Council (NEC) and assured the minister of his total support. He informed the minister that Taraba State had started the implementation of the new national minimum wage for its workforce.'Let me congratulate you on your presentation of the Productivity Measurement Policy to us at the National Economic Council meeting. Productivity is one of the greatest setbacks that I see among Nigerian workers; it has been a very serious issue that is undermining the growth of the country. We are at the verge of serious collapse because of lack of productivity policy. For you to have come up with such a brilliant idea about productivity, I must say, I congratulate you and I look forward to a better Nigeria through the implementation of this programme.'The governor added: 'I am pleased to inform you that we have started the implementation of the new minimum wage in Taraba State and we are ready to do everything possible to cooperate with this ministry. I will continually come to exploit the diverse opportunities that are available in this ministry.
