Suspected Ebola case in Obafemi Awolowo University 'Suspect had contact with P/Harcourt victim

Published by Tribune on Wed, 10 Sep 2014

THERE was fear in Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, on Tuesday, over a report of a suspected case of Ebola virus disease in the institution. It was reported that a female student of the institution, whose name could not be ascertained, had contracted the disease and currently receiving treatment at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife.A student of the university, who pleaded anonymity, hinted that a student who recently returned from Port Harcourt, was, in the early hours of Tuesday, rushed to the university's health centre from where he was referred to the OAUTHC.The rumour, which generated tension among undergraduates, compelled parents and guardians to make contacts with their wards, regarding their safety.A source at the OAUTHC hinted that a patient, who claimed to be a student of OAU, was admitted at the hospital, but failed to give further details on the results of diagnosis carried out to ascertain her Ebola status.Confirming the development, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the institution, Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju, informed the Nigerian Tribune that the suspected student was discovered to have had secondary contact with an Ebola victim in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, adding that she fell sick when she arrived in the university and was rushed to OAUTHC.According to him, the student had been evacuated to Lagos, where she would undergo screening, in order to verify if she had actually contracted the disease. However, the university's PRO said there was no established case of Ebola in the campus until the results of the diagnosis to be carried out on the suspected student were released. He allayed fear of the university community and the entire Ile-Ife town, charging them not to entertain fear over the development.
