THIS is a call to obey for all Nigerians. There is a need for us to have a holistic and panoramic view of the past, present and future leadership of this country and suggest possible ways forward. As a young Nigerian, I grew up to know that the independence of Nigeria was achieved without blood shed. But right from inception of Nigeria as a sovereign state and in recent times, it has been struggle for power, bloodshed and lack of democratic benefits for her citizens. Every tide rises and falls on Nigeria leadership system. The present leadership is experiencing a serious turbulence and we can never tell what the future of Nigeria leadership could be. I wish that all Nigerians both within and outside the country could suggest more possible ways forward. The possible ways forward:1. A NATIONAL CONFERENCE CALLThe under development and recent crises being experienced by all states of the federation, requires a conference call for a national resolution by all the 36 states governors and other elder states men who wish to move this country forward. The time has come for us to put our religious and political differences aside and think of creating a leadership future for our beloved country-Nigeria. There is a need for a dialogue where ideas of building a better Nigeria will be suggested and followed for visible results.2. NATIONAL INTEREST IN NIGERIA LEADERSHIPIf we have leaders who have the interest of Nigerians at heart and are willing to sacrifice their lives to protect the lives of the masses -then we will know that our vote counts. The reasons other developed countries are progressing is because they have such leaders who are representing their interest in government. For instance, there will be decrease in crime rate once the benefit of democracy is delivered to the grass root. The founding fathers had the interest of our freedom at heart and they made good sacrifices to get us independence. Nigeria has enough resources for her development, but our big challenge is lack of good managers for her abundant treasures. Until we think of our fellow compatriots first before ourselves we are going nowhere yet.3. TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY IN THE LEADERSHIP SYSEMIt is a good step in the right direction that the current president has signed 'freedom of information (FOI)' bill; indicating his interest for transparent governance. But it does not stop at that, there is a need for a pragmatic follow-up to ensure the practice of the bill. The question of accountability is still a mystery in Nigeria's leadership system. The sign of true responsibility in leadership is accountability.4.TOTAL RESPECT FOR THE RULE OF LAWWe clamour that no body is above the law yet we have some sacred cows that are untouchable in spite of their corrupt practices. We will keep having corrupt leaders and misappropriation of fund until we allow the rule of law to take its full course in bringing to book offenders of the law no matter how highly placed they are in the society. Interference of government in the assignment delegated to chief security officers who are responsible to arrest and question fraudsters in Nigeria leadership system should be checked. We need a decisive government that should be able to remove any government official that is not delivering the dividend of democracy to the masses by due process to instill discipline in others.5. DECENTRALIZATION OF POWERThere is much concentration of power with the federal government. The states in Nigeria should be given the right to manage her resources, people and security; while the federal government supervises their affairs. The type of government Nigeria is running today is affecting her productivity, security and economic growth.God bless Nigeria government in their quest to respect our candid request.UCHENDU KINGSLEY isAuthor: SUCCESS COMPASSKingsleyike92@yahoo.com
