The birth of a new Nigeria

Published by Guardian on Mon, 17 Oct 2011

I BELIEVEstrongly that the change every Nigerian is clamouring for is in our hands. We might not be able to change our past or rewind it, but we can do much to change our future. I am one of the advocates for the REBRANDING PROJECT of the former Minister of Information and Communication Dora Akunyili. But I've come to realize that this project can only be possible if the mentality of all Nigerians is positively changed. The government cannot work effectively without the people, and the people need the government to attend to the major needs in the society. Therefore, the drastic transformation anticipated by well meaning Nigerians is beyond the lone effort of Mr. President, party institution and constitution. It would require the uncompromising; consistent collective effort of all Nigerians and not a one man affair. In respect to this, if we want the birth of a New Nigeria; Nigerians must join in the fight of achieving the major goals that will better the situation of this country. Such as: discouraging bribery and corruption at any level in the society, embracing national unity which enhances development, encouraging community policing to track suicide bombers and robbers, checkmating adverse government policies, investing in our human resources, utilizing effectively our natural resources and bringing culprits to book. These would propel us to make an incredible progress and impact among other nations of the world. And above all, a nation that is built on truth and transparency, righteousness and justice with incessant prayers will surely succeed despite all odds. We decide our future by our present actions. If we can start the change from ourselves and from where we are, then every other factor will be very easy for us to handle. Anybody can be an agent of positive change because it is possible with a personal decision. Let us not wait for things to happen when we can make it happen by turning on the power that lies within us. Our destructive power can be converted into a constructive power if we believe in birthing a New Nigeria. However, to whom much is given much is expected. Our elected political leaders have much stake in this because they are expected to represent our interest and use the abundant resources in their disposal for the benefit of every Nigerian Citizen. We can easily attract the respect and commendation of other countries if we do things the right way. For instance, the recent past election is still a very big credit to the image of this country in the outside world because we decided to get it right for once. Change is not only a constant thing in the human life but it is also possible; though sometimes difficult to adapt to. Nigerians in Diaspora will have regard and be very proud of their country when there is an emergence of a paradigm shift. The future of Nigeria depends on God and the Nigerian people. I think we must let this truth sink in everyone of us in order to make progress in birthing a New Nigeria. There is too much shift of blames because we try to escape from our obvious mistakes instead of accepting the responsibility and doing something to change it. If we keep blaming ourselves or repeating our mistakes, we can never grow beyond the point where we are to experience radical changes. The shedding of innocent blood of other Nigerian citizens through political or religious motivated violence is not an act of God and could provoke His wrath. Fellow compatriots, this is a call to arise for justice, truth and equity in the land by seeing unity as strength in our diversities. Finally, we can do much good than the harm that had been already done to this country so that we can achieve visible developmental goals. God bless the giant of Africa in her strive to thrive.UCHENDU. I. KINGSLEY is Author: SUCCESS COMPASS) E-Mail: Kingsleyike92@yahoo.com
