24 private schools in Lagos have confirmed their participation in this year's Doregos Inter-School Basketball Competition, which dunks off next month. The tournament, which is in its eighth edition promises to be exciting, as some new teams will be taking part in this year's championship. The tourney was initiated by the proprietress of Doregos Private Academy, Clementina Doregos with the aim of encouraging youths to dissipate their energy of meaningful activity, which she believes will be beneficial to their health and academics.According to the Principal of the hosting school, Johnson Adebayo, the tournament has continued to grow in each year with more schools willing to be part of the event.'The purpose of the championship is to encourage youths to put their energy on sports, which will believe will aid them in their academics and also boost their health. We are hoping that more teams will continue to be part of it. For this year, new trophy will be unveiled for this year's championship and we wish all the teams luck and hope they will eschew violent and exhibit sportsmanship spirit throughout the event,' Adebayo said. For the Director of Doregos, Tokunbo Doregos, efforts have put into ensuring that the competition receives more attention from schools. He therefore promised that as host, the tournament would continue to improve yearly.Four centres across Lagos will host matches, while the final holds in February 2012.For teams in Island, Lagoon Secondary School will host their matches while International School, Lagos (ISL) host teams from Mainland. Chrisland School and Doregos Private Academy will host the other teams. To check the use of mercenaries, schools are expected to present their Year Book before every match.Among the schools confirmed are Vivian Fowler Memorial Girls College and Sound Hope College, which will be making its debut while ISL will be defending the title it won at the last edition.
