Indomie rewards three Nigerian Children for bravery

Published by Guardian on Mon, 17 Oct 2011

FOR daring to go the extra mile in taking the decision to save lives, three Nigerian children were last week honoured by Dufil Prima Foods Plc at the 2011 Indomie Heros Award, a Corporate Social Responsibility project. The three children, drawn from a pool, who also performed the same feats, were found outstanding. They saw death about to snatch a victim but rather than tremble and do nothing for fear of losing their lives, they took steps to rescue the victims. The star prize winner, a 14 years old boy, Njoku Chigbo from Abakaliki in Ebonyi State, saw a loaded boat capsizing with the people on board but rather being afraid of drowning and looking away, he jumped into the river, took turn to move the passengers and the load out of the river and went on to invite other villages to pull out the motorcycle which the boat was also carrying. He got N1 million and plaque for his bravery. The first runner up, 10-year old girl, Ajila Wehbe, safely assisted in delivering her elder sister who had gone into labour in the middle of the night with no doctor or nurse on hand to perform the task. She performed the delivered neatly with no complication and taking all the necessary steps a doctor or nurse would have taken. For doing this and saving her sister who had gone into intense labour, she was awarded the first runner up, 2011 Indomie hero Award plaque and N700,000.The second runner up, 15 years' old Sule Mallam Hamza from Nassawara, also saved the life of a little boy, who was drowning. He saw the boy who had gone to the river with his other siblings and was drowning but instead of looking away, he jumped into the river and not only rescued the boy, he ensured that the water the boy had gulped was forced out of the boy. Hamza got N500,000.
