Bayelsa 2012: New twists, anxiety as Jonathan keeps mum

Published by Tribune on Mon, 17 Oct 2011

New twists andturns have continued to trail the February 2012 governorship election in Bayelsa State as the silence of President Goodluck Jonathan has thrown anxiety and confusion into the camp of the president's loyalists who are poised to stop Governor Timipre Sylva from running on the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).The party's governorship primary is scheduled to hold in the next 32 days to pick a governorship candidate.Already, a cross section of the party's leadership in the state, mostly those of the Green Movement, has endorsed the member representing Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Honourable Henry Seriake Dickson, as possible replacement for Sylva. The Green Movement was the political platform of President Jonathan when he contested the state governorship election in 2006.But the Nigerian Tribune authoritatively gathered that the seeming silence of the president has created uncertainties as regards the endorsement, fuelling speculations that the permutations have not ended. As of the time of going to the press, more power blocs have emerged as another group known as Corporate Nigeria for Bayelsa has surfaced and entertainment guru, Ben Bruce, is being touted as a possible contender on its platform. Also on the cards is what a source called the Third Force, ostensibly backing former Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Matters, Mr Timi Alaibe.Alaibe, before now, was the governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the state before the Appeal Court verdict pushed forward the governorship election in Bayelsa alongside four others on the ground of fresh polls conducted in those states before the 2011 governorship election.A source close to the president's political camp told Nigerian Tribune on condition of anonymity that those desirous for a change in the state are presently at a loss.
