Iperu, Ode-Remo residents seek police protection for banks, others

Published by Tribune on Mon, 17 Oct 2011

Residents ofIperu, Ode-Remo and Isara in Remo North Local Government Area of Ogun state have called on state governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun and the leadership of the state police command to beef up security in the area to boost social and economic lives of the people.Community News learnt that the poor security situation in the area has forced commercial banks operating in the area to vacate the place.Community News findings revealed that a new generation bank opened a branch at Iperu to meet the banking needs of the people in the area, but it could not operate for more than three weeks due to constant raiding by the men of the underworld. Also, another bank, which has a branch at Ode-Remo, had also decided to close shop when customers and the bank were losing money to armed robbers who usually stormed the bank on regular basis.Community News gathered that businessmen and residents now travel to Shagamu, Ijebu-Ode or Abeokuta for their banking transactions.'We want the state police command to do something about the poor security situation in his area. We have to travel for about 20 kilometres before we can do any banking transactions. It is very bad. We cannot blame the banks for deserting our area. They are business venture and they cannot continue to operate in an unsecured environment," Alhaji Adebayo Adisa, a cocoa merchant in the area, told Community News.Another resident, Titus Oduola, lamented that most of the armed robbers who were finding it difficult to operate in Lagos, were now moving to Ogun state and because of the proximity of the area to Lagos state, the people are the major victims. "Things are terrible for us,' he said.
