Popo-Yemoja residents decry insecurity

Published by Tribune on Mon, 17 Oct 2011

Residents ofPopo-yemoja, Iyana-Asuni, in Ibadan South-West Local Government,Oyo State, have voiced out their worry to the Oyo State government over the lack of security and inadequate protection of their lives and property in the area.Community News gathered that the problem has been on over the years, while the residents have been living in fear, expecting the unexpected development could happen anytime, as a result of the questionable characters of some hoodlums in the area known as ''Omo Adugbo.''One of the residents, who identify himself as Mr Femi Adegbite, said 'we have been living in fear for the past three years and each time they started their trouble, people's property are damaged in the process. We feel totally dehumanised,' adding that the police were also aware of the terror-gang in the area but had done nothing.Another resident, Mrs Folashade Adelabu, said 'our lives and property are not secure, even the security agent couldn't arrest those area boys,'' he said. She stressed further that 'they (Omo adugbo) could come around anytime and instruct everybody, especially petty traders, to lock up our shops and we mustn't resist as failure to obey their commands could lead to infliction of severe injuries on such person, using bottles and cultlass.''We are pleading to the state government to do something prompt to rescue the situation before it gets too late as we are sick and tired of living in fear,' she concluded.
