Published by Tribune on Mon, 17 Oct 2011

A Lagos housewife, who allegedlyleased out her matrimonial home and fleeced some tenants of N385, 000, was on Wednesday charged before a Surulere Chief Magistrates' Court.Thirty-year-old Amaka Atuana, a mother of three, who is facing an eight-count charge of fraud and stealing, however, pleaded not guilty.Atuana was alleged to have collected the money upfront from four different people and leased out the apartment to them. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the prosecutor, Sgt. Sunday Olaide, was, however, absent in court, but the Investigative Police Officer (IPO), Sgt. Ngozi Asiegbu, took over the prosecution of the case.Asiegbu told the court that the accused rented out the flat to four people -- Miss Favour Ibe, Miss Kelechi Ogadinma, Mr Echono Azubuike and Miss Ifeoma Azubuike. She said the accused had on Sept. 27 at 12, Idowu St., Aguda, Surulere, obtained N145, 000 from Ibe, N110,000 from Ogadinma, N100,000 from Echono and N30, 000 from Ifeoma. The offences, Asiegbu said, contravened Sections 390 (9) and 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State. The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Abiola Sholadoye granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties each in like sum.Speaking to NAN after the arraignment, Asiegbu said the husband of the accused travelled out of Lagos when the apartment was allegedly leased out by the wife. She said the husband had already ordered the ``illegal tenants'' to quit. They have demanded a refund of their money. The case has been adjourned till Nov. 30 for further hearing.
