UNAAB VC bemoans deplorable condition of Abeokuta, Alabata road

The Vice-Chancellor, University of Agricul-ture,Abeokuta (UNAAB), Professor Olufemi Olaiya Balogun, has bemoaned the deplorable state of the Abeokuta-Ibadan highway and the access road that leads to the school gate.Balogun, who spoke with newsmen over recently, said that the federal road from Moshood Abiola Way Junction to the institution's junction and beyond, needed a major reconstruction to alleviate the untold hardship being experienced by motorists and other road users plying the road.He said that the institution, out of his lean resources, had been financing the repair of some bad portions of the road, saying the institution's workers and students have voluntarily made themselves available on regular basis to fill the potholes and evacuate the drainage on the road.Of particular mention were the frontages of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), and Olikoye Ransome-Kuti on the road which had been worsening due to the downpour so far witnessed this year.The VC said that no amount of palliative measure carried out on the road would solve the problem, but insisted that a major reconstruction work must be carried out on the road linking the state to Oyo and northern states.He advocated for the dualisation of the road to ease traffic congestion been experienced by motorists, appealing to the state government for the construction of feeder roads in the state.According to him, 'This University has been using part of his lean resources to service this federal government and link road to the institution's gate. This has started since 2007 till date.'The terrible situation of the road is not a question of patch and paste. The road needs a total reconstruction work. There is need for the federal government to dualize this road to ease congestion while the state government must consider the construction of more feeder roads. This Abeokuta-Ibadan road is the only route from Lanfenwa to Ibadan.'If you have appointment at UNAAB by 9:00 a.m. in the morning, one needs to leave the comfort of his or her house as early as 6:00 a.m. from any part of the city, so as to meet up for the appointment.'Many of our students leaving off campus on daily basis passes through harrowing experiences before getting to school due to the bad nature of the roads. I appeal to the Federal government to as a matter of urgency direct the agency concerned to repair the road in the interest of the generality of the users.
