Published by Guardian on Wed, 19 Oct 2011

TO deepen its call for Nigerian's to adopt the country's top-level domain name, the .ng, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), has urged the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) to switch to Nigeria's domain name. This, according to NITDA would empower the CAC to recommend the .ng as a prerequisite for the registration of a business name or the incorporation of a business in Nigeria.NITDA, which stated in the communiqu issued at the end of its co-workshop with the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) on the theme: 'Swtich to .ng', noted that the two bodies and the Nigerian Communications Commission were natural complimentary organisations in the vanguard of lifting the .ng ccTLD to international relevance.NITDA stressed that CAC's adoption would go a long way to strengthen and encourage other Nigerian organisations and upcoming ones to adopt the domain name. The workshop, which was held recently in Lagos, the communiqu noted that the Federal Government was not unmindful of the domain name management and administration, hence it had put in place adequate measures to among others maintain integrity and credibility of the. gov.ng namespace by avoiding confusion, improve public confidence in government information, promote infrastructure development, deploy central domain name servers.Other measures include developing a web content policy and guidance, e-mail management system, organise training and workshops and maintain a database of .gov.ng.NITDA in the communiqu made available to The Guardian recently explained, 'Nigeria is not an island onto itself, that is why NITDA is developing the National IT policies in order for her to comply with internationally recognised conventions and dispute resolution procedures.'The commission further explained that it was declared at the workshop that the .ng was a national resource and everybody should join hands in promoting it,that Nigerians must not feel inferior to any other country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) or generic Top Level Domain (gTLD),that the prevailing struggle for international superiority is on the frontiers of cyber space, that the .ng ccTLD is much better positioned to win the war because of its uniqueness.
