Remembering Allah

Published by Tribune on Mon, 21 Mar 2011

Allah is our Creator and the Creator of everything that exists. He brought us to existence from non-existence. He is the provider of our needs and the supplier of our demands. Neither does He have a beginning nor an end, He ever exists. Supreme in His majesty, He is the Lord of Honour and Glory.Allah deserves to be remembered in all situations and conditions. He is As-SamadThe Eternally besought of all; none can do without be seeking Him whether consciously or unconsciously.Almighty Allah (SWT) enjoins us to remember Him and never to forget that He is watching over us.Remembering Allah can be taken to connote four things: Remembering Him as our Lord and creator who deserves to be worshipped at the stipulated time; being conscious of His Omnipotence and Omnipresence; remembering Him to celebrate His praises and adorations and being conscious of our return unto Him and standing before His judgmentRemembering Allah as our Lord and Creator would steer us to recounting His favours and blessings over us and thus giving thanks unto Him. Allah (SWT) says, Remember me, I shall remember you too, give thanks unto me and never be ungrateful. (Q2: 162)Allah enjoins us to show gratitude unto Him by recalling his boundless favours over us. Allah (SWT) also mentions this in the Glorious Quran. It is He (Allah) who brought you forth from the wombs of your mothers when ye knew nothing and He gave you the senses of hearing and seeing; intelligence and affection that ye may give thanks unto Him. Q16:78Almighty Allah bestowed upon us these senses that we may be conscious of our duties unto Him and never fail in these duties. The essence of our creation is to serve and worship Him and Him alone (nothing beside Him). Our ability to hear the call to pray and see worshippers trooping to the mosque is a proof against us on the day of judgment if we fail to respond.Remembering Allah also means being conscious of Allahs presence at any point in time . Allah says: Verily, the Lord is (as a Guardian ) on a watch over you. Q89:14. He (SWT) also says, Seest thou not that Allah doth know (all) that is in the heavens and on earth That there is not secret consultation between three but He makes the fourth among them , nor between five but He makes the sixth nor between fewer nor greater but He (Allah) is with them  wheresoever they may be... Q58:7.The above mentioned verses and several others like them are calling our attention to the fact that we should always remember Allah in all what we do or are doing because He is very much aware of our words and action; nothing can hide from Him.Remembering Allah in this respect would guide us to righteousness and drive us away from evil acts. The Holy  Prophet (SAW) used to supplicate: Allahumma aiini ala dhikirika wa shukrika wa husni ibaadatika, meaning: O Allah: help me to remember you , be thankful unto you and worship you perfectly.
