MTN will release call log only on court order

Published by Guardian on Thu, 20 Oct 2011

TELECOMMUNICATIONS outfit, MTN Nigeria, has told the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) disciplinary committee investigating allegations of match-fixing against some prominent members of the Nigeria Premier League (NPL) that only a court order would compel it to release the accused persons' call log within the investigative period. The NFF panel is investigating the Week 34 NPL game between Lobi Stars of Makurdi and Sunshine Stars of Akure following allegations by officials of the Makurdi-based club that their opponents might have fixed the game. The NFF committee, in its efforts to examine the telephone conversation between the officers of Sunshine Stars and the match referees implicated in the allegation, wrote to the telephone firm on September 30 requesting the release of call logs of the affected officials days before and after the Week 34 game. The Guardian learnt yesterday that while MTN stated its readiness to look into the panel's request, it, however, would require a court order or the intervention of the Nigeria Police to make the call log available, stressing that it was against its ethics to release call details to the NFF.The firm, therefore, advised the NFF to either seek a court order mandating it to release the call log to the committee or seek the intervention of the police, who would in turn approach them for the release of the document. Confirming the development yesterday in Abuja, secretary of the panel, Tunji Aderibigbe, revealed that after receiving MTN's reactions, the committee quickly involved the Nigeria Police in the case.'We have received MTN's response to our request and have taken their advice to either seek a court order or use the police to seek the release of the call log to the committee. But rather than seek a court order, the committee resorted to police intervention and we have already written the police to intervene in the case,' he said.
