CIBN partners Canadian bank, high commission on economic development

With a view to complementing various efforts by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to stabilise the Nigerian financial system, the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) is partnering the High Commission of Canada in Nigeria and Royal Bank of Canada on some strategic issues that would position the economy for sustainable growth.The cross-border partnership, which is on a seminar with the theme: Transfor-mational Banking for Economic Development of Emerging Markets: Nigeria in Focus, is scheduled for today, at the Lagos Oriental Hotel, Lekki Road, Victoria Island, Lagos.The seminar is specifically designed for top executives of banks, discount houses, and other financial institutions in the country.Speakers at the event will include the following experts: Mr. Kenneth Spurling, former Vice President Treasury, Caisse Central Desjardins; Mr. Jean Christophe Claude, Head of Compliance and Risk Management RBC (Suisse) Switzerland and Mr. Bismarck Rewane, Managing Director, Financial Derivatives Ltd.  There will also be a live video conference with Senior Executives of the Royal Bank of Canada. This is expected to generate institutional insights that will help transform banking operations in Nigeria for the envisaged economic growth.Canada is one of the few economies not affected by the recent global economic downturn. It certainly will interest the operators in the Nigerian economy to understand how Canada achieved the feat.The CBN Governor, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, will deliver the keynote address while Jean-Jacques Gauthier, Deputy High Commissioner of Canada in Nigeria, will deliver the welcome address.  Mr. Laoye Jaiyeola, President/Chairman of Council, CIBN, as the Chief Host, will make the opening remarks.
