SNIs plan to disrupt port activities failed Ologbese lauds Dimka for being proactive

Published by Tribune on Mon, 21 Mar 2011

The Save Nigerian Importers threat to disrupt ports activities in Lagos and publicly harass the Customs Comptroller General, Alhaji Dikko Abdullahi, died a still birth, as seasoned freight forwarders associations dissociated themselves from the threat, insisting that the gesture was self seeking.Heading the groups of those who rolled the carpet off the Save the Nigerian Importers (SNI) was the association of the Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents ANLCA whose call for its members to ignore the threat coincided with ports business analyst, Prince Olusegun Ologbeses commendation of the proactive measures adopted by the Federal Operations Unit to entrench security of cargo in the ports, in case the threat was effectively carried out. This is a faceless group, recruited, funded and instigated by some disgruntled elders, declared the ANLCA Tin Can Chapter Chairman, Kayode Farinto, positing that the desire of the faceless group was merely to cause confusion.Condemning the threat and the proposed attempt to disrupt ports activities, he charged his members to have nothing to do with actions that might cause chaos and mayhem in the Lagos ports.Farinto described the action as despicable and cowardly from a rag-tag group which came from a hiding place to make demands, some of whom he said were self-serving and wondered why anybody would want to rise against the Customs boss at this time when he (Dikko) had opened a channel of communication with all the stakeholders thereby engendering peace in the port. This type of thing is uncalled for at a time when peace is gradually returning to the industry. Last year, we witnessed series of protests and confrontations between freight forwarders and the Customs arising from communication  breakdown, but this year, the CG has been magnanimous enough to initiate series of stakeholders meetings where the  two parties had ironed out their differences while the CG has even directed his commands to embrace dialogue observed the Chapter leader. He  wondered why the sponsors of the protest failed to avail themselves of such channel of communication to iron out their grievances instead of adopting crude ambush to crude method capable of disrupting the fragile peace at the port.
