FG initiates sensitisation programme for attitudinal change

Published by Tribune on Mon, 21 Mar 2011

The Federal Government took the bull by the horn by effecting the right attitudinal change as it, last week, endorsed the sensitisation of freight forwarders through unfolding unto them, the most recent approach towards doing their task in Lagos. In a two-day workshop organised by the Scanner giant, scanner service providers, the Cotecna, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Finance, which held in Apapa, the government told the licensed agents to see reasons why they must adopt computerisation to march the dreams of evolving a modern-day freight forwarding.Stressing the need for capacity building, the National President of the National Council of Managing Director of Licensed Customs Agents (NCMDLCA), Mr. Lucky Amiwero, said the workshop was the third segment of the Federal government initiated capacity building/ technical assistance programme, designed basically to meet the needs of the customs agents. The drive to build capacity for the licensed customs agents started about twenty years ago with persistence, consistent focus and visionary leadership, which influenced the approval that was granted by the federal government to train and equip the licensed customs agents so as to meet up with the challenges ahead in the international trade environment he explained, adding that the programme started with the Societte Generale Surveillance (SGS), Webb Fontanne and finally Cotecna,  all in a bid to encourage participating freight forwarders to know what was required of them in the performance of their statutory tasks in the present dispensation in order to ensure they harness every opportunity optimally, especially after participating in the arranged programmes.I want us to know that as we have participated in the programme, we will never remain the same again. The programme is expected to equip us to master the challenges in the very hostile environment where we have been operating in the last decade, indicated Amiwero, pointing out that trained participants would also be awarded internationally recognised certificates, lauding the government, especially the Federal Ministry of Finance and the presidential taskforce on Customs reforms, for their commitment to the success of the various training and enlightenment programmes.
